The Terrain
2021 has been anything but “business as usual” for the casual outdoor furniture market. The lingering effects of COVID lockdowns, and increased demand for all sorts of goods in North America specifically, have contributed to disruptions in the global shipping network and pressure on supply chains more broadly.
Importing luxury furniture from overseas has become a costly proposition, both in terms of time, and expense. Container costs have doubled, as have lead times for delivery, and manufacturing outages have spiked costs for raw materials: furniture designers such as Mamagreen have noticed a 30% increase in foam costs for cushion inserts, a 7.5% increase in fabric upholstery costs (when it’s available at all), and even increases in the price of screws, nuts, and bolts.
All that being said, demand for casual outdoor furniture in the luxury residential market has never been hotter. The work-from-home revolution has spurred many consumers to make improvements to their home, and uncertainty around travel and the hospitality industry has led many to outfit their backyards and patios into the ultimate “staycation” destination.
Mamagreen
Trends in the design community are certainly not immune to market forces. Mamagreen founder, CEO, and Design Lab head, Vincent Cantaert, early in the pandemic made the decision to shift resources towards production and development of thoughtfully curated collections for the luxury residential market.
As the travel and hospitality industries gradually reopen, these will be important markets too and shape future design trends as ownership of properties have experienced turnover, prompting redesigns and reimaginings of hotels and vacation rentals, and many designers, like Mamagreen, have been hunkering down in their design studios.
With demand for casual outdoor furniture not likely to dissipate any time soon, most voices across the industry advise consumers and interior designers to get their orders in for 2022 now. CurranHome is excited to launch three new Mamagreen collections for sale on our site immediately. Olaf is a contemporary wicker dining seating set. Maxximus is Mamagreen’s longest extendable table to date. And Boulevard is a vast assortment of configurable deep seating modules, with double sided configurations available as well (individual elements have front and back seating), and can be layered with table piece inserts, sun shades, and more.
The Story of Mamagreen
Mamagreen: the name kind of says it all. It suggests a deep connection to the natural world that nurtures and informs the commitments of this very eco-focused designer. Mamagreen was founded in 2007 by Vincent Cantaert, a designer from Belgium, who now heads the Mamagreen Design Lab, where he’s been joined by young Indonesian designers, Barbara Widiningtias and Zaenal Abidin, and a supporting team of sample makers and engineers.
Guided by two controlling principles: (1) a commitment to respectfully sourcing the raw material resources that go into furniture production, and (2) design innovation, Mamagreen has become a recognized leader in the casual outdoor furniture business.
With their manufacturing facilities located on the island of Java in Indonesia, Mamagreen has instant access to nearby working teak forests for their Grade A teak. However, Mamagreen takes their commitment to sustainable eco-friendly design many steps further. Fully 90% of the teak Mamagreen uses is recycled from abandoned buildings. They also repurpose their material waste to support the local Indonesian incense industry. Reclaimed teak adds undeniable character and style to their furniture collections, and even after it is lovingly restored and refinished, it purposefully retains some of the nail holes and distresses of its former life, proving just how durable and noble of a material it really is.
With its old-world basket-style wicker lashings and industrial stainless steel frames,Olaf by Mamagreen is a set of dining, lounge and bar chairs equally at home on a downtown rooftop bar, or on a seaside wharf hosting a cozy seafood dinner for two.
Mamagreen’s longest extendable table to date enters the ring at more than 13 feet long, and confidently boasts the ability to seat up to 14 guests with room to spare. Design innovations, such as a German-designed sliding track extension system, underlay its impressive size, adding functionality that makes this table appropriate for any size occasion or environment, whether it is a weeknight family meal or a formal dinner party with your extended social circle.
Like a quiet cafe amid a bustling street scene,Boulevard by Mamagreen invites us in to sit down and watch the world go by. With its sprawling seating, low center of gravity, and blocky undercarriage, the design feel of these modular lounge pieces is reminiscent of a luxury sportscar. Each individual element can be grouped together, and layered with additional features such as sunshades and table surfaces, to create increasingly sophisticated and custom set ups.
There are about a dozen traditional sectional sofa style configurations, and an almost equal amount of double sided combinations. Double sided furniture elements have seats facing front and back, with a removable backrest in between. These double sided configurations can be used as a hinge to bring together different furniture groupings, or act as an independent island to double your space’s seating capacity. Remove the middle backrests to convert these configurations into spacious luxurious daybeds.
